'The Bourne Legacy' trailer: Matt Damon didn't believe in it -- should we?

Okay, there’s good news and bad news about The Bourne Legacy. The bad news is that Matt Damon isn’t even appearing in this movie, so the whole idea of making another Bourne movie seems completely unnecessary. This isn’t even a James Bond situation where we have another actor coming on to play the Bourne character either, this movie is about a different brainwashed secret agent altogether. The other bit of bad news is that, from what we can gleam from the new trailer, The Bourne Legacy is the type of film that’s going to have dialogue as shitty as, “Jason Bourne was just the tip of the iceberg.” Heavens to Betsy.

There’s good news too, though. First off, Tony Gilroy is going to be the writer/director. Lame callbacks to the Bourne character aside, that should mean that the rest of the series will bridge as organically as possible into this one; Gilroy has writing credits on all of the others, after all. And he directed Michael Clayton, which was pretty decent, so you know they didn’t throw some studio hack (Brett Ratner) on this one just to desperately squeeze another dollar out of the Bourne name. No, they’re squeezing another dollar out of the Bourne name with as much care as possible.

The second bit of good news is that Jeremy Renner looks completely credible as Bourne’s replacement, Aaron Cross. After turns in stuff like the latest Mission Impossible and this summer’s Avengers movie, he should be getting pretty good at this action stuff. And from the glimpses of all the fighting and explosions we get in this trailer, I don’t think he’s going to disappoint. Heck, he might even be so good we can get a Cross vs. Bourne movie next, after Damon gets his panties out of a bunch, stops buying zoos and signs back on to kick more ass in action films.

A guy can dream, can’t he?
